October 19, 1935 — August 1, 2023

Thomas J. Welsh, age 87, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Residential Living Center in Garnett, Kansas.

Tom was born on October 19, 1935, at Mont Ida, Kansas, the son of Howard and Hester (Dixon) Welsh. Tom graduated from Welda High School, and served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960. He then went to work in the local oil fields, and lived in Welda.

He was united in marriage to Barbara (Stiffler) Stroup on October 28, 1962, in Miami, Oklahoma. When Tom met Barbara, he immediately fell in love with her three little girls, they were married, and then they were blessed with another daughter, who he called "Little T".

Tom and Barb owned a bar "The Spot" for 12 years. They also owned the Eastside Market where Tom worked as a butcher. Tom then worked for the Kansas Corporation Commission from 1978 to 2006. After retirement, Tom worked for Patriots Bank as a courier, and at Rockers Liquor Store.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Eastern Star and American Legion. Tom and Barbara enjoyed camping at their property at Hidden Valley Lake. He loved watching old western movies, feeding the birds and squirrels, and especially loved their dogs. But, the love of his life was watching the grandkids and great grandchildren at their sport events, birthdays, and any activities in which they were involved.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Tommy; and sons-in-law, Pat Rues and Terry Caudell.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Welsh, of the home; four daughters, Connie Rues of Garnett, Kansas, Terri (Rick) Jones of Hutchinson, Kansas, Chris Freelove of Colony, Kansas, and Tammy (Jeff) Dieker of Colony, Kansas; ten grandchildren, Ryan (Jenn) Rues of Emporia, Brent Rues of Olathe, B.J.
