Shirley Joan (Jody) Peters, age 80, passed away March 24, 2026, in Chanute, Kansas, after a relatively short battle with health issues. Shirley was born December 27, 1945, in Chanute, Kansas, to Franklin Schooley and Lillian (Dwinell) Schooley.
Shirley enjoyed living in Humboldt her entire life. She worked at H.L. Miller & Son dress factory after high school, and that is where she met the sister of the man she would love for the rest of her life.
Shirley married Darrell D. Peters on March 10, 1968. That marriage led to the birth of their four children.
In the early years of their marriage, they enjoyed riding their motorcycles together and riding in the truck on trips made for the brick company. Both being hard workers, they very much enjoyed their weekends together. In their later years, she and her husband mowed yards together (their own and others), and collected cardboard for a local community service project. Then, many times after the work was finished, they would take a drive to the Iola Dairy Queen just to get an ice cream cone. Mixed in with all of that would be random trips to Joplin to see her sister or just to get out of town for the day together.
Shirley worked as an in-home daycare provider for 50 years, and in the late 1990s started cleaning at B&W Truck Beds, where she worked for many years. She and her husband both fully retired in March of 2020.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years; her parents; her sister, Ester (Peggy) Riebel; and her grandson, Dylan Peters.
Shirley is survived by her children, Daren (Sheila) Peters, Humboldt, Kansas, Dana Peters, Humboldt, Kansas, Sabrina (Brendan Williams) Peters, Erie, Kansas, and David (Lindsey) Peters, Andover, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Yockey (husband Jerry, whom she loved like a brother), and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation for family and friends will be Thursday, April 2, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., in The Venue at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, in The Chapel at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Humboldt, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, Shirley's wishes were to have memorials made to the Humboldt Volunteer Fire Department. Memorials may be left with Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Highway 54, Iola, Kansas 66749.
Condolences for the family may be left at www.feuerbornfuneral.com.
