Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Durand, age 96, passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Parkview Heights in Garnett, Kansas, peacefully with family by her side.
Mary was born in Manatee, Florida, to Claude Flowers and Eleanora (Lane) Flowers. Mary married Milo Maurice Durand Sr. on July 8, 1944 in Bradenton, Florida. Milo and Mary met while he was in the army and stationed in Florida. This marriage was blessed with 4 boys - Maurice, Phillip, Robin, and Allan. After he got out of the service, they moved to western Kansas where Milo was originally from so he could farm with his father. He then took a job in construction which moved them frequently to numerous states. They eventually built a home in Salina, Kansas, but then had to move to Wichita, Kansas in 1959 due to his job. They later moved to Garnett, Kansas in 1969. Milo and Liz later divorced in 1982. She then moved to Georgia to care for her father until his passing in 1999 and then to Panama City, Florida until 2018 when she moved back to Garnett until her passing. While she was sad to leave Florida, she was happy to be closer to her family.
Most of her early life she was a homemaker but after moving to Garnett, was a waitress for many years at the Sherwood Inn Restaurant. Even after moving to Florida she continued to waitress well into her 80's. She thoroughly enjoyed her customers and they adored her as well and frequently talked about her "regulars". She loved reading, baking, cooking, knitting, crocheting, playing BINGO,making homemade Christmas stocking, and the KC Chiefs (especially Mahomes)! There was nothing better than Liz's homemade pies or noodles! While she had many hobbies she loved, the one thing that brought pure joy to her heart was being Gigi to her great grandkids.
She was preceded in death by Claude Flowers (Father), Eleanora Flowers (Mother), Nell Flowers (Step-Mother), Claude "Bo" Flowers (Brother), Charles Flowers (Brother), and Crystal and Andrew Durand (Grandbabies).
She is survived by her four children, Milo Maurice (Patricia) Durand Jr of Kincaid, Kansas; Phillip (Rachel) Durand of Shawnee, Kansas; Robin (Susan) Durand of Garnett, Kansas; Allan (Lisa) Durand of Warsaw, Missouri; siblings, Gordon Flowers and Joann Pridgen; along with 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.
