Mark Daniel Hughes, age 55, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
Mark started his journey here on Earth, in the small town of Postville, IA, on February 18, 1969. Shortly thereafter, he moved with his parents, Mark and Janet, to Cedar Falls, where he resided until moving to Lawrence, Kansas in 1980. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1987. In high school, Mark thrived as the Lawrence Lions mascot. In 1997, he moved to Canada where he learned multiple skills, including heavy equipment operation and roofing. In 2008, he moved back to Kansas and put his roofing skills to use, working for a roofing company in Topeka, Kansas. During his time as a roofer, Mark started working towards a career as a professional maintenance technician, learning multiple trades such as city sewer system maintenance, plumbing, electrical, and replacing gas lines for various companies. His expertise in those trades eventually landed him in Garnett, Kansas, in 2011 where he worked for the remainder of his life.
Mark was an avid bow hunter and fisherman who loved spending time outside with his friends and family. But his biggest passion was martial arts. He loved participating in tournaments as a competitor, but really loved teaching. One of his goals was to become a martial arts coach and help the next generation of young martial artists follow in his footsteps.
Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Janet Katherine Mortensen of Cedar Falls, IA.
He is survived by his father, Mark Richard Hughes and wife Penny, of Topeka, Kansas; children, Caitlin Morin and fiance Ely Bishop of Lacygne, Kansas, Mason and Makiya Hughes of Kitchner, Ontario, Canada and Trenton Howe of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Abigail Morin, Paislee Morin, Alaric Bishop, Ollie Bishop; brothers, Mike Hughes and wife Amanda of Topeka, Kansas and Van Hughes and wife Brenda of Romney, West Virginia and numerous other family and friends.
