Juliana Elaine (Lickteig) Mader, age 93, of Garnett, Kansas, changed her address and died peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2026, surrounded by her family in the home she and Joe built.
She was born on September 19, 1932, the firstborn of ten children of August and Mary (Jockman) Lickteig. Julie was a lifelong resident of Anderson County. She married the love of her life, Joseph Anthony Mader, on May 29, 1951. This union was blessed with 15 children. They raised their family on a farm southwest of Richmond.
Julie was a natural-born caregiver, first caring for her siblings, then helping area families when they had a newborn before she had her own family. Julie drove a school bus for years, worked on the election board for Putnam Township, and was actively involved in St. Boniface Catholic Church ministries. Joe and Julie enjoyed the friendships that resulted from their 17 years with the Archdiocese of KCK Pre-Marriage Program. She enjoyed embroidery, flowers, and her family. Julie was clear in her communication, but above all, she will be remembered as loving and kind and Julie will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe (2017); two sons, Ed (2004) and Greg (2020); daughter, Margie (2024); three sons-in-law, Dale Milner (2017), Dave Hermreck (2017), and Rod Lutz (2020); parents, Gus (1982) and Mary (1981) Lickteig; three brothers, Harley (2005), Marvin (2020), and Glen (2022); and two sisters, Carmen (2026) and Margaret (2026).
Julie is survived by eight daughters and four sons: Mary Milner, Ray Mader and wife Anna, Dan Mader, Irene Tastove and husband Frank, Dave Mader and wife Julie, Nancy Hermreck, Ann Lutz, Bob Mader and wife Kristy, Carol Lutz and husband Milton, Jan Grollmes and husband Linus, Tina Mader, and Amy Mader; daughter-in-law Donna Mader; son-in-law Robert Tastove; thirty-six grandchildren; fifty-nine great-grandchildren; her three brothers and one sister, Cecil Lickteig and wife Dorothy, Oralee O'Brien, Eugene Lickteig and wife Stacey, and Roy Lickteig and wife Joyce; two sisters-in-law, Joann Lickteig and Beryl Lickteig; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Scipio, Kansas. Burial will follow in the St. Boniface Cemetery. Julie's family will greet friends following the rosary at 6:00 P.M. Friday evening at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Carmel Hall.
