James "Jim" Prater, age 78, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at Anderson County Hospital, Garnett, Kansas.
Jim was born to Ralph and Grace (VanHorn) Prater on July 19, 1946, in Phoenix, Arizona. He attended school in Phoenix and graduated from South Mountain High. After graduation he joined the Navy and fought in the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged he was united in marriage to Alice Cass on June 14, 1969. This union was blessed with one son. They shared many years of happiness, but later parted ways.
If you knew Jim, you knew he was a jack of all trades. He dedicated many years to Kalmar, Anderson County Road Department, Warners Manufacturing, and truck driving. Outside of work, you would find him on the back of a mule, riding trails with friends and family, creating lasting memories along the way. He enjoyed attending the cross country trail ride at Eminence, Missouri, every year. His most prized possession was his "$25,000" belt buckle that he received for attending Eminence trail ride at year 25. Jim was a long time member of the Garnett Saddle Club, and had a passion for watching local rodeos.
Jim knew no stranger, if you weren't his family, you likely became his family. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, whether it was out dancing or having a social drink, you could guarantee he would be there and have plenty of stories to tell you. He was a simple man- as long as there was a cup of black coffee, a pocket on his shirt and a cigarette in his hand, life was complete.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son; sister; nephew.
He is survived by numerous family, friends, and "adopted" family.
A graveside service will take place on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 10:30 A.M., at the Garnett Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Jim Prater Memorial Fund to help offset funeral expenses. Condolences for the family can be left at www.feuerbornfuneral.com.
