Irene L. Louk, age 84, of Bush City, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Moran Manor in Moran, Kansas.
Irene Louise Pinneo was born on September 8, 1941, at St. John's Hospital in Allen County, Kansas, the daughter of Francis and Lola Margaret (Carter) Pinneo. She graduated from Kincaid High School in 1959 and attended Allen County Community College.
She was united in marriage to Gary Louk on May 27, 1961, in Selma, Kansas. Their union was blessed with five children and spanned 65 years.
Irene was a dedicated mother and farm wife. She worked for H&R Block in Garnett for 15 years. Her passion for nature and community was evident throughout her life. She was a member of the Selma Methodist Church and an active participant in several garden clubs. Irene attended monthly garden club meetings in Topeka for many years, a tradition she began with her grandmother, Carter, and continued with her mother. Her expertise in horticulture led her to serve as the superintendent of flower exhibits at the Kincaid Fair from 1980 to 2023, and she enjoyed serving as a flower judge for many years at numerous county fairs.
She took great joy in traveling. When their family was young the family took many trips to Colorado for a summer backpack trip. Irene would weigh everyone's backpack and distribute the weight evenly, but by the end of the trip she would always have the heaviest pack. Irene was a good sport as she went on many family canoe trips despite her not knowing how to swim. The travels took on a more convenient theme as the time passed. Throughout the years, Irene and Gary were able to enjoy many trips including bus tours to Savannah, Chicago, and Niagara Falls, as well as visiting Quebec City, Canada. A highlight of her travels was a 40-day trip to Alaska, which included driving across the Arctic Circle. She also traveled frequently to Denver to attend flower symposiums. While her children were growing up, she was active in the community as a leader with the Selma Flaming Arrow 4-H Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Lola Margaret Pinneo; her son, Earl Dean in 1965; and her half-brother, Russell Eugene Pinneo.
Irene is survived by her husband, Gary Louk; one daughter, Nancy Becker and husband Gene of Kincaid; three sons, John Louk and wife Terri of Lone Elm, Roy Louk and wife Denice of Bush City, and Dale Louk and wife Jennie of Moran; two brothers, Wesley Pinneo and wife Beverly of Colony, and Henry Pinneo and wife Linda of Fort Scott; two brothers-in-law, Glen Louk and wife Donna of Hutchinson, and Leonard Louk and wife Vicky of Bush City; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren, with another expected in August 2026.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Garnett. Irene's family will greet friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
