Hiram Smith

July 9, 1941 — April 22, 2025

Hiram "Ed" Smith, age 83, most recently of Garnett, Kansas, passed away peacefully, on April 22, 2025, in Richmond, Missouri.

Hiram was born on July 9, 1941 to Hiram and Marie (Johnson) Smith, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He attended school in Bell City, Missouri, and went on to join the AirForce. Shortly after his time in the AirForce, he joined the Union Pacific Railroad. He dedicated 34 years of service to the railroad before retiring in 2002.

Hiram was united in marriage to Raylene Fitzgerald on December 24, 1963. This union was blessed with four children. Later he married Ann Lou Smith.

Hiram was an avid outdoorsman, with a deep love for the wilderness. Deer hunting was among his favorite pastimes, though he also found great joy in fishing. Some of his most memorable fishing adventures took him to Canada, where he chased Northern Pike across pristine waters. He made many trips to Colorado for elk hunting-experiences he treasured deeply. He also enjoyed hunting in Arkansas with friends, where he notably learned to catch wild hogs with his bare hands. Of all his outdoor pursuits, the fishing trips shared with his sons held a special place in his heart, creating memories they would carry forever.

Hiram was proud to promote the principles of fair chase through the Kansas BowHunters Association and numerous other organizations that reflected his respect for the outdoors and hunting.

He appreciated the simple things in life and embraced them fully. More than anything, Hiram was a teacher of life-imparting wisdom, values, and strength to his children and grandchildren. His legacy lives on through the many life lessons and traits he lovingly passed down.

Hiram was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anne Smith; siblings, Ellen Lowe, John Smith, Jim Rainwater; and granddaughter, Madi Smith.

Hiram is survived by his children, Kieth Smith, Travis Smith, Rob Smith and wife Kim, Jason Smith and wife Stephanie; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; siblings, Esther Cook, Marg Mier; and many nieces and nephews.
