Eldon Ackerly Pontious

January 13, 1926 — September 14, 2022

Eldon Pontious, age 96, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at Parkview Heights in Garnett.

Eldon Ackerly Pontious was born on January 13, 1926, in rural Miami County Kansas. Eldon was the first of two children born to Bernal and Margaret "Maggie" (Ackerly) Pontious. He graduated from Osawatomie High School, and then served in the U.S. Navy from November 1944 to July 1946. While in the Navy Eldon was a signalman on a minesweeper, the USS Pursuit. Following his service in the Navy, Eldon attended Baker University, where he met his future wife, Betty Elliott. On June 22, 1947, Eldon was united in marriage to Betty at the First United Methodist Church in Garnett. This union was blessed with two daughters, Nancy and Linda. They made their home in Garnett, where Eldon and his father in law, Floyd Elliott, opened Elliott's Dairy in 1948. Eldon worked in the business and took care of deliveries to the customers for over 45 years. Eldon was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Garnett Lion's Club and the VFW. As a young man Eldon enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling in his free time. Following Floyd's death Eldon and Betty purchased the Elliott farm from Betty's mother, Marie. After retiring from the Dairy business Eldon spent many years farming east of Garnett. He also took up woodworking in his retirement years, making many items that are cherished by family and friends. Eldon and Betty enjoyed square dancing. They played bridge for many years with their Pot Luck card group. They also both enjoyed gardening, and he continued gardening after Betty's passing, sharing the produce with family and friends. In their retirement years Eldon and Betty were able to enjoy traveling and some of their journeys included places that Eldon had been, while serving in the Navy. Eldon was an unwavering fixture in the 6 AM coffee group in Garnett, his attendance was only stifled by the restaurant being closed. He also greatly enjoyed the friendships of fellow church members and Sunday lunches together.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Pontious on February 5, 2015.

Eldon is survived by his daughters, Nancy Farrar of Topeka, Kansas, and Linda Umbarger of Garnett; four grandchildren, Stacey Noll, Kristin Lotridge, Chad Farrar and wife, Robin, and Heath Farrar and wife, Brenna; ten great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; and his sister, Wilma Wingo of Princeton, Kansas; and nieces, nephews and other family members.
