Beautiful. Kind. Understanding. Strong. With an unshakable faith. Our loving mother Dorothy Jean Tippie McGhee went to meet her heavenly father Sunday morning January 11, 2026 surrounded by family. Dorothy entered this world September 17, 1933 to John and Addie (Heinlein) Tippie on a farm north of Carlyle, Kansas. The youngest of 3 girls. She was raised on several different farms in Allen and Anderson Counties. For her 13th birthday her sister Arlene gifted her a guitar, which she taught herself to play. From there forward there was music. She and dad played guitar and sang together since high school and for many years after and then with our sister Terri. Mom loved music. It was in our home, the milk barn, the car all singing together as we rode. Everywhere. Dorothy graduated valedictorian from Colony High School May 1951. Married Duane O'Dell McGhee June 24, 1951 at Northcott Church. They made their home on a dairy farm west of Colony where they raised their four children. In 1981 they moved to Iola. She worked at Duane's Flowers for many years. She enjoyed her job, her flowers, making arrangements, and working outside maintaining the lovely flower beds she and dad created so there is always something in bloom. She is a member of the First Christian Church of Iola, Topps, former member of Iola Red Hots square dance club where they had lots of fun and friends. After retirement in 1998 the folks spent many hours volunteering at Stone Croft Conference Center in Hollister, MO where they got to enjoy the area they loved so much in Branson with all the music.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Duane McGhee; her infant daughter, Anita Rae; her parents John and Addie Tippie; and her sisters, Arlene Koons and Donna West; Daughter In-Law Carol Sue McGhee.
She is survived by her four children, Leslie and wife Linda McGhee of Kincaid, Kansas, Kendall and wife Christy McGhee of Neosho Falls, Kansas, Terri and husband John Louk of Lone Elm, Kansas, and Pamela and husband Duane Campbell of Colony, Kansas; 16 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren; Dorothy's love and legacy will live on in not only her family but those blessed to know her.
