Cheryl Walton, of Prairie Village, passed away peacefully at her home on December 27, 2025.
Cheryl was born on May 14, 1950, in Altamont, to Vincent and Velma (Drummond) Walton. From an early age, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. Bright, compassionate, and driven by a love of learning, Cheryl dedicated her life to education and helping others reach their full potential.
She spent her early childhood in Kansas City before moving to Liberty at the age of 12. She graduated from Liberty High School in 1968 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in education from William Jewell College. During those years, Cheryl began her teaching career with the Liberty School District, where she taught elementary education and quickly demonstrated the gifts that would define her life's work.
Cheryl was united in marriage to Rick Estabrook. Though the marriage later ended in divorce, Cheryl continued to build a life centered on education, service, and personal growth.
Determined to expand her knowledge and impact, she attended Northwestern University, where she earned a master's degree in education. She then worked for Thresholds in Chicago, eventually serving as a director of staff. In that role, she helped support individuals facing emotional challenges and substance abuse issues, as well as children and teenagers in need of guidance and care.
Cheryl later joined Glenbrook High Schools, where she became head of her department and served as a supervisor for programs at both the north and south campuses. She was especially dedicated to helping students with learning disabilities, advocating for their success and creating opportunities for them to thrive.
After many successful years in Illinois, Cheryl returned to Liberty to help care for her parents. During that time, she also assisted with the family business, Bakery Cafe. Never one to stop learning, she returned to school once again and earned her doctorate from University of Kansas. Following graduation, she worked with educational and redemption programs in Johnson and Wyandotte Counties, continuing her lifelong mission of helping others overcome obstacles and achieve success.
One of Cheryl's greatest professional accomplishments was developing her own reading program. She had a remarkable ability to connect with struggling learners and was widely respected for her skill, patience, and dedication. Over the years, she worked with countless students, many of whom achieved success because of her encouragement, expertise, and belief in their abilities.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Cheryl embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. She loved traveling and exploring new places, visiting countries including England, Ireland, France, Wales, and Canada, as well as many destinations throughout the United States. Although declining health eventually limited her travels, she never lost her desire to see more of the world and experience its beauty.
Cheryl also had a deep appreciation for the arts, cultural events, and lifelong learning. She enjoyed discovering both new and beloved restaurants, attending cultural activities, and sharing experiences with friends. Her love for animals was evident throughout her life, especially her affection for cats and dogs, which brought her great comfort and joy.
Cheryl will be remembered for her intelligence, kindness, determination, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Whether as a teacher, administrator, mentor, advocate, or friend, she touched countless lives and left a lasting legacy of compassion and service.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lewis and Ethel Drummond and Ray and Irene Walton and her parents, Vincent and Velma Walton.
She is survived by her cousins, Billie Kingsolver, Monique Walton, Michelle Kassakatis, John Walton, Candy Hughes, Ashley Walton-Duxbury, Nicole Kassakatis, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by her friendship, wisdom, and caring spirit.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace.
The family will hold a private service.
