In Loving Memory of Carl Eugene Slaugh

Carl Eugene Slaugh, a devoted father, grandfather, and public servant, passed away on April 9, 2025, after a valiant fight with cancer.

Born on May 14, 1948, in Logan, Utah, Carl was the fifth of thirteen children born to Owen and Verona Slaugh. Raised in the close-knit community of North Logan, he grew up in a home full of energy, love, and laughter.

Carl graduated from Sky View High School and went on to attend Utah State University, where he earned a degree in Trade and Industrial Education. During his college years, he took time to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Austria from 1967 to 1969, an experience that shaped his lifelong dedication to service and faith.

In 1973, Carl married Cheryl Kay Doudna of Earlville, Iowa. That same year, Carl entered the U.S. Air Force through the ROTC program, embarking on a 20-year career in military service. He began with pilot training at Webb Air Force Base in Texas, later becoming a flight instructor on the T-37 jet before transitioning to flying UH-1N helicopters. His service took him and his family across the country and overseas, including assignments in Utah, Oklahoma, Michigan, Alabama, New Mexico, North Dakota, Germany, and California. Along the way, he completed a master's degree in Industrial Education.

Carl and Cheryl raised five children - Joseph, Karla, Jennifer, Heidi, and Russell - instilling in them the values of hard work, faith, and service.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1993, the family settled in Kansas, where Carl pursued a second career in public service. He earned a master's in Public Administration from the University of Kansas and served in several city leadership roles, including city administrator for Hiawatha, Basehor, and Iola, Kansas. Even after retiring in 2016, he continued to serve his community as a city council member in Iola.

Carl enjoyed serving in many volunteer positions, both in the community and for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many leadership roles, but especially loved his service as a Scoutmaster, youth leader, and temple worker.

Carl was a man of principle and quiet strength. He loved a good project, gardening and outdoor activities, and time spent with his children and grandchildren. He lived his life with integrity and purpose, and his legacy will live on in the lives he touched.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Verona Slaugh, and his older brother, Reed. He is survived by five brothers and six sisters, his five children: Joseph (Miriam) Slaugh of Lawrence, Kansas; Karla (Jed) Nye of Pleasant View, Utah; Jennifer (Sungti) Hsu of Fishers, Indiana; Heidi (Ezra) Hallam of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Russell Slaugh of Oceanside, California; 17 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Carl's life was a journey of service, love, and unwavering devotion to faith, family, and community. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A funeral service for Carl will be held on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 2:00 PM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1420 E. Carpenter Street, Iola, Kansas.
