Betty Jean Brownback, age 83, of Tonganoxie, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2026, after surgical complications.
Betty Jean Brownback was born on December 13, 1942 to Virl Harry Kimzey and Bertha May Patton in Moran, Kansas. After completing the 7th grade, at Iola City Schools, she chose early in life to start raising a family.
In 1956, Betty Jean married Walter Neal Sponseller. Betty and Walter had two children Curtis Alan and Richard Dean. In 1964, Betty Jean married Donnie Calvin Brownback. Betty and Donnie went on to have one child, Donnie Calvin Brownback II, and together raised Richard Sponseller and Curtis Sponseller.
She enjoyed cooking, especially her well-loved brownies and crafting through crocheting, knitting, and plastic canvas. Her generous heart ensured that many people owned a treasured piece she lovingly made. She also loved attending fairs throughout the surrounding states.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Virl and Bertha, her brother, Donald; and her son Curtis.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Don of the home; her son Donnie and his wife Jennifer and two grandchildren Mauryn Elise and Taylor Riley of Lenexa, Kansas, son, Richard Sponseller of Warsaw, Missouri; brothers, Isaiah and Albert Kimzey and sisters, Edith Jones, Katherine Gafford, Nelda McAnally and Barbara Medlock, all of Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Blue Mound Bible Church, Blue Mound, Kansas. Betty's family will greet friends an hour prior to the service at 10:00 A.M. at the church. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mildred, Kansas.
