Bernard Scheckel

September 24, 1958 — July 10, 2025

Bernard John Scheckel, age 66, of Richmond, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Louisburg Healthcare and Rehab in Louisburg, Kansas.

Bernard was born on September 24, 1958, in Garnett, Kansas, the second of eleven children born to Ambrose and Nell (Hermesmeyer) Scheckel. He graduated from Garnett High School in 1976. Following graduation, Bernard worked as a mechanic and for Brummel Farm Service before beginning his successful career as a truck driver. Throughout his years of driving, Bernard hauled produce, equipment, and rock, before specializing in fuel transportation, a venture he grew into a thriving business. Bernard also worked at Skyhook in Ottawa as a welder and fabricator for ten years. He had a natural talent for electrical work and was often the "go-to" person for electrical problem diagnosis for many family and friends.

Bernard was a truly likable and approachable man with a big heart. He was very social, enjoying conversations with anyone he met, and was particularly fond of Applebee's. He deeply loved children and was always willing to help anyone in need, never wanting to see others suffer. He was known for carrying M&M's and delighted in giving them to children he met. Bernard had an ornery and playful spirit, often teasing his caregivers, who "appreciated" his sense of humor. He famously loved to say "ouch" when receiving a shot, even when he had no feeling in the area.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, Ambrose and Nell Scheckel; his brother, David Scheckel; and his nephew, Mikey Scheckel.

He is survived by his children, Emily Anne Scheckel and Alan Scheckel. Also mourning his loss are his siblings: Lynard Scheckel, Gerald Scheckel and wife Leslie, Greg Scheckel and wife Carrie, Philip Scheckel, Rosemarie Wonnell and husband Charles, MaryCarol Hermreck, Germaine Olsen, Carmel Halstead and husband Eddie, and Michele Lutz and husband Darin, along with many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Scipio, Kansas. Burial will follow in the St. Boniface Cemetery, Scipio. Bernard's family will greet friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday evening at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope House of Ottawa and left in care of the funeral home.
