Barbara Jane (Massoth) Sigler, age 76, of Humboldt, Kansas, passed on to her eternal reward on July 18, 2025, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas.
Barbara was born in 1948 in Iola, Kansas, during a Neosho River flood, her father driving through rising waters to ensure her safe arrival. She was raised on the family farm southeast of Piqua, Kansas, alongside her older sister Roberta and younger brother David. A lifelong Catholic, Barbara attended a Catholic primary school in Piqua and later graduated from high school in Parsons, Kansas, in 1966. Following the counsel of her mother, she earned her cosmetology license after completing school in Independence, Kansas.
In 1967, Barbara married Bob Sellman, and together they welcomed their daughter Brenda and son Steve. The family lived in Pittsburg before settling in Chanute, where Barbara began her career in cosmetology. It was during these years that she formed cherished lifelong friendships with Anita and Judy, doing hair "right by the tracks" in Chanute and lovingly "spinning heads."
Barbara later met and married Richard Duane Sigler in 1977. Richard enriched her life with his four children, Mark, Lori, Julie, Diane. Richard and Barb also welcomed two more children, Jared and Janelle, and briefly lived in Bellefontaine, Ohio, relocating for Richard's work, before returning to Kansas to make their forever home in Humboldt. Barbara continued her work in cosmetology and salon ownership, often alongside her dear friends Anita and Judy, while raising her family.
A woman of unwavering faith, Barbara returned to the sacraments in the mid-1990s and became deeply involved with Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Humboldt. She served faithfully as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and volunteer with the Altar Society. She was at church each morning, praying the Rosary, so devoted, in fact, she once prayed the Rosary as she was pulled over for speeding and avoided a ticket, "by the grace of God."
Barbara's passion for the sanctity of life was evident in all she did. In the mid-1980s, she became an active voice with Kansans for Life, designing and promoting Pro-Life floats for the annual Biblesta celebration in Humboldt for over 35 years. In 2010, she made a pilgrimage to Italy with friends from Saint Paul, Kansas, visiting holy sites and attending Mass at the Vatican, an experience she treasured deeply.
Barbara had a generous spirit and a deep love for her family. She delighted in time spent with her grandchildren, who will dearly miss her toast made with French bread, it always tasted better at Grandma's, her pickles, and her famous Christmas puppy chow. Every Christmas season was marked by joyful time in the kitchen with her grandkids, making the sweet treat together. She never missed a birthday, always sending a homemade card and a dollar for each year of age, lovingly remembered by each of her grandchildren.
Recent years were filled with simple joys, Saturday morning coffee with Jared, her lawn freshly mowed by Steve, and Friday morning breakfasts with her grandson Austin. Her heart was never far from her family, her church, or her community.
Barbara was able to attend the 2025 Massoth Family Reunion just a week before her passing, reuniting with cousins and extended family. Now, she rejoices in a greater reunion in Heaven, welcomed home by her beloved husband Richard, on August 20, 1999; Her parents Jerome and Anna; Sister Roberta; Dear friends Anita and Judy.
She is survived by her children, Brenda and Alex Pitts of Chanute, Steve and Melissa Sellman of Humboldt, Jared and Stacie Sigler of Humboldt, and Janelle and Matt Aikins of Iola Mark and Linda Sigler of Chanute, Lori and Kenny Swiler of Chanute, Julie Anderson of Olathe, Diane Haskins of Valley Center; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; Brother David and Irene Massoth of Pittsburg; extended family, and countless friends, whose lives were touched by her kindness, her faith, and her love.
