Charlie Hughes

August 1, 1951 — May 16, 2023

Charles A. "Charlie" Hughes passed away peacefully at his home in Olathe on Tuesday, May 16. Charlie fought prostate cancer for over 20 years.

Charlie was born on August 1, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri to Arthur "Chub" and Nada Hughes. Story goes that Nada was visiting her sister in Kansas City when the river waters rose and she was unable to get home before Charles decided to make his appearance. Charlie...a Missourian...a fact he didn't share with many! Rumor has it, Chub rented a row boat and entered the dangerous waters to get everyone home asap.
Charlie was raised in Garnett, Kansas and graduated from Garnett High School with the class of 1969. He played football, basketball (Charlie liked to say he averaged 12 points a game his senior year..that included warm up shots too), track, school plays, and STUCO. Charlie attended Emporia State University and graduated in 1973, where he was very active in student government at ESU. After graduation, he came home and began working at People State Bank in Richmond, Kansas. Jim Cooper gave him this job and to this day, he is grateful for the guidance that Jim gave him. Charlie made a career move in 1994 and began working for State Farm in Chanute, Kansas. As Susie says, if there was a list of people that would have never left Garnett, Charlie's name would have been near the top! But this was the right move for the Hughes Family. Charlie retired from State Farm in December 2021.

On July 22, 1978 Charlie and Susie were married in Lyndon, KS. They were blessed with their daughter, Courtney.

Charlie enjoyed a life blessed with many friends whom he loved with all his heart. He loved to fish, golf, play poker, have parties, plan events for Susie to host and have a good time. He was a die hard Chiefs and Jayhawks fan too! He began going to Roaring River with his parents and Bill when he was 8. Roaring River was a happy place for him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chub and Nada, and grandson, Jordan Brady.

Survivors include his wife, Susie of the home, daughter and son-in-law, Courtney and Bryan Brady of Hays; three grandchildren, Jake, Josie, and Jentry Brady; and brother, Bill and wife, Rochelle of Jenks, Oklahoma, and brother in law, Terry Gurss and wife, Donna of Broomfield, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their appreciation for all the love and support shown to them, especially during these last few weeks in Hospice. Charlie fought the good fight.

Charlie's family will greet friends from 2:00-4:00 PM, Saturday, May 20, 2023 at the First Christian Church , Garnett, Kansas. A private inurnment will take place in the Garnett Cemetery.
