Carrol L. Baker

Carrol L. Baker, age 86, of Humboldt, Kansas passed away on March 6, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.

Carrol was the second of three children born to Lonnie Lee and Blanche (Beeman) Baker. He was born on July 29, 1933, at Humboldt. Carrol grew up in Humboldt, attending a country school before graduating from Humboldt High School in 1950. Following high school Carrol attended Junior College in Chanute, before being drafted into the US Army. Carrol was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Carrol lived in Newton, Kansas following his time in the military. In 1968 Carrol returned to Humboldt, Kansas, where he began driving for Ruan Transport. Over his 28-year career he worked in a variety of capacities for Ruan, working in Kansas City for a while, before returning to Humboldt and Chanute, eventually, retiring in 1997. Carrol met his wife, Rita, at Ruan. They married on May 15, 1978, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. They made their home on the farm east of Humboldt where they raised their family. Carrol farmed, raised cattle and helped Rita with the dairy. Carrol loved his animals. Throughout his years, the farm encompassed a variety of animals but his cow, Ethel, and dog, Barney, always held a special place in his heart. Carrol drove a school bus for Iola and Humboldt for 18 years. Carrol loved riding motorcycles and was an officer in the BTW motorcycle club. Carrol’s stories and jokes will be missed by all.

Carrol was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

He is survived by his wife, Rita, of 41 years, of the home; six children and their spouses, Dennis and Janice Baker of Humboldt, Donita and Mike Fitzmaurice of LaHarpe, Kansas, Dianne Lisa and Chip Johnson of Savannah, Missouri, Kim and Wally Ross of Marion, Kansas, Robbie and Gina Baker of Humboldt, Kansas, Ron and Julie Baker of Mooresville, North Carolina; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; his brother, Joe and Anita Baker of Iola; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, March 12, 2020 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Humboldt. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Humboldt. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, in The Venue at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Hwy 54, Iola, Kansas.
