Bob Burns, age 92, of Iola, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, at Allen County Regional Hospital, Iola.

Bob was the second of two children born to Vere Thomas Burns and Olive Josephine (Attkisson) Burns. He was born on June 25, 1927 in Fort Scott, Kansas. Bob grew up in Hepler, Kansas, graduating from Hepler High School with the class of 1947 after serving two years in the Navy. Bob served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 following his service during WW II. Bob then served in the Naval Reserve and the National Guard for an additional 23 years. On May 28, 1949 Bob was united in marriage to Maude Ilene Stringer at Hepler. Their union was blessed with four children. Bob’s work with the phone company took their family to many Kansas towns before they made their home in Parsons, Kansas for twelve years. In 1969 they moved to Iola. Bob worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone for 33 ½ years, retiring in 1984.

Bob and Maude were members of the Carlyle Presbyterian Church. He served as Commander of the Iola American Legion, Post #15, four times as well as the District Commander. Bob also belonged to the LaHarpe Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a fifty plus year member of the Masonic Lodge, he entered the Lodge at Hepler, later transferring his membership to Iola. They enjoyed many years gathering with Telephone Pioneers camping club. Bob and Maude’s travels took them to all fifty states and provided countless memories. The family enjoyed many years at their cabin at Grand Lake. Bob loved to laugh and dance. Bob and Maude were active in the Friday Night Card Club at the Iola Sr. Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry Wayne Burns in 2012; and his sister, Elaine Neil Evans in 2013.

Bob is survived by his wife of 70 years, Maude of the home; two sons, Don Burns and wife, Jane of Gas, Kansas and Ron Burns of Iola; daughter, Cinda Jones and husband, Mike of Moran, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Kim Burns of Iola; five grandchildren, Brad Fraker, Amy Harris, Candi Morris, Nick Burns, Becky Burns; and seven great-grandchildren, Kimberly Fraker, Sadie Harris, Sidney Harris, Austin Morris, Aiden Fraker, Sebastian Morris and Jaxson Burns.

Bob’s family will greet friends from 3:00 - 5:00 PM, Sunday, December 22, 2019 in The Venue at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, Iola. Cremation will follow the visitation. A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 28, 2019, at the Hepler Community Center, 105 N. Prairie Ave. Hepler, KS 66746. Memorials are suggested to the Hepler Cemetery or to the Carlyle Presbyterian Church and may be left in the care of the funeral home. Condolences may be left at www.feuerbornfuneral.com .
