Marjorie L Thomas

Marjorie L. Thomas, age 88, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospice House, in Kansas City, Missouri. Marjorie was born September 1, 1925 at Hillsdale, Kansas. She was the youngest of three children born to Forrest Irving Officer and Josephine Emma (Eoff) Officer. Marjorie grew up in Hillsdale. Her family later moved to Garnett, where she graduated from Garnett High School in 1944. Following high school Marjorie attended the Midland Radio Technical School, and after the completion of her training; she worked for Eastern Airlines in Atlanta, Georgia. She was later transferred to Evansville, Indiana where she was a dispatcher during W.W. II. After the war she returned to Kansas where she worked in the bank at Bronson and Columbus. On March 28, 1953 Marjorie married Raymond Craig Thomas at Garnett, Kansas. They made their home on a farm near Mont Ida, Kansas. This union was blessed four children. Marjorie helped Ray on the farm until he discontinued farming. She then went to work at Warner Manufacturing in Garnett until 1974. Marjorie then began working as a Police Dispatcher for the City of Garnett, retiring in 1990 after 16 years of service. With excess time on her hands in retirement, Marjorie found a number of things to keep her busy, including working at Casey's as a donut cook, volunteering at numerous community groups, leading bingo, and reading to nursing home patients. Marjorie loved people and especially loved doing for people. She was an active member of the First Christian Church, Garnett, where she was a member of the Christian Crafters; a group she enjoyed immensely. Marjorie served on the board of the Area Agency on Aging for many years and was always willing to do what she could to help provide to the elderly in Anderson County. She also served as a Silver Haired Legislator for a number of years representing Anderson County in Topeka. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.). Marjorie kept a full schedule and was able to enjoy coffee with her friends and trips to Dairy Queen for ice cream until her health prevented in the last few weeks. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond, in 1995; two brothers, Forrest Officer Jr. and Dr. James Officer. She is survived by her three sons, Don Thomas and wife, Mae, of Council Grove, Kansas, Les Thomas and wife, Lennet, of Garnett, and Stephen Thomas of Iola, Kansas; her daughter, Evelyn Seitz of Peoria, Illinois; 6 grandchildren, Angela Mikesell, Eric Thomas, Patrick Kellerman, Cynthia Connor, Christina Seitz, and Heather Fuller; 7 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Alyssa, and Isabella Mikesell, Allison Thomas, and Tripp, Maegan and Brode Fuller. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 4, 2014 at the First Christian Church, Garnett. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Thursday evening at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 219 S. Oak, Garnett, Kansas 66032, and from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Friday prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, Garnett or to the St. Luke's Hospice House and left in care of the funeral home.
